3rd March 2003. Turin Brakes, support I Am Kloot. Birmingham Academy. £13.00.

I was quite looking forward to seeing support act I Am Kloot. I used to listen to their first LP first thing when I worked in the record shop first thing in the morning for about a two month period – it was cool coffee music. Sadly this did not transfer to their live performance, live they were a bit shambolic. Not shambolic as in like The Pogues (in a good way) but shambolic as in a bit crap.

Rate 5 out of 10.

For a brief period Turin Brakes (possibly the easiest band to miss-spell) too had an awful lot going for them. Kinda Indie, kinda Neil Young, nicely mellow, on a respectable record label, in short well positioned. The crowd were up for it but again i’d say they were not as good as they could have been and after 30 minutes or so became a by the numbers live set. Not awful but not properly seizing their moment.

Rate 7 out of 10.
