As much as I admire John Carpenter movies I never got round to watching Assault On Precinct 13 until 2002.
His third movie (1976) is far better than you would imagine due to it being so early in his filmography. I already loved They Live, Halloween, The Thing and Escape From New York.
Almost impossibly it may offer his best ever soundtrack. Making great movies was not enough for Carpenter. Straight away you pick up on the minimal electronics from Carpenter. The sound makes the movie better than it already is. I won’t ramble on about the film, find some time and watch it (and ignore the remake). The near silent shoot-out in the Police Station is just fantastic cinematography.
On first watch the music stands out so much, it’s somewhat like very early Human League minus the vocals and adds massively to the tension…
