Who would argue that the best Red Hot Chili Peppers album isn’t Blood Sugar Sex Magik? That 1991 Rick Rubin produced album is a classic (double) LP.
If pushed, I’d say the bands 2nd best album is the surprise return to form 1999 album Californication which too is a great record.
Ask a different question. What is the bands best song? I’d go with Knock Me Down from 1989’s Mother’s Milk. It betters everything on those two stand out albums.
Knock Me Down, whilst encapsulating the band also pushes boundaries. Funk, Punk (in spirit), and that soulful break / vocal at the end. It is one of few songs that you really do not want to end, the rise at the ends leaves you crying out for more. Listen to it, am I wrong?
It is odd that the Red Hot Chili Peppers have never been labelled as sell-outs. They are one of the most successful bands in the world and have been for a long time. I guess they deserve the credit. At one glance you can tell they are born to be rockstars, Kiedis has always reminded me of Iggy Pop for some reason. Most people seem to like them and they do indeed occupy quite a unique place…
