Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – The Mercy Seat.

In 1988 Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds began to make records with no real equal. The band had released four albums previously but with this single release the band, and singer stood apart for the first real-time. It is seen as Nick Cave’s first classic song. The single, which did not chart, also sits on the album Tender Prey which is arguably his first essential album.

The song is a nightmare mantra of a man destined to die. It is defiant throughout and shrouded with non-stop religious imagery. Feeling like both a ballad and a hollow post punk whirlwind it is a song that is delivered in a way that songs just aren’t…
