The National – Afraid Of Everyone.

In 2010 The National released their 5th album High Violet. The album is up there with their very best albums and probably, at a push, is their 2nd best album. The album peaked at Number 5 in the U.K. album charts despite the band being relatively ‘unknown’.

Afraid Of Everyone (from High Violet) is a song that encapsulates the band. The suits the group wear are like metaphorical restraints that they allow to hold them in until the swell of their songs spill and let rip – they can’t really be contained when they switch gear. A band it is very hard to categorise. I can see why people may think Coldplay but The National, to me, echo Joy Division and there surely is a New Order influence that shines through the guitar coupled with blistering vocals which also build with subtle menace and waves of power. You don’t get this band? You’re not listening closely enough…
