Tone Loc – Wild Thing.

In 1988 Tone Loc released his debut single Wild Thing. From the Van Halen musical sample (guitar) to the video, a cheeky rip-off of Addicted To Love (Robert Palmer) and the actual song title this triple homage took Hip-Hop overground. Peaking at Number 2 in the States and Number 21 in the U.K. the single suffered (in England) from poor distribution (Delicious Vinyl) and achieved notable success.

The hook of the song saw real commercial success that elevated Tone Loc to the mainstream. The accompanying debut album Loc-ed After Dark went double platinum in America and credible sales worldwide. What the music did was to cross Rap over pushing commercial buttons whilst still maintaining a credible Hip-Hop sound. Flawed but key in acceptability of the medium. More importantly – it still sounds great today…
